About St. Jerome
Saint Jerome (c. 347–420), priest and Doctor of the Church, devoted his brilliant mind and tireless energy to helping Christians understand Sacred Scripture. His translations of much of the Old Testament from Hebrew into Latin, together with his revision of the Latin Gospels, became central to the Vulgate, the Bible that nourished the Western Church for centuries. Settling in Bethlehem, near the birthplace of Our Lord, he spent his remaining decades in prayer, study, and writing, supported by Saint Paula and her daughter, Saint Eustochium. His life joined rigorous scholarship to the sacrifices of a monk, placing his learning at the service of Christ.
A beloved medieval legend tells that Jerome courageously approached a wounded lion and removed a thorn from its paw; the grateful creature became his peaceful companion. Although this is a legend rather than established history, it explains the lion so often pictured beside him in Christian art. The scholar who handled difficult biblical texts is thus remembered also for tending a suffering creature. Saint Jerome is the patron saint of biblical scholars, translators, librarians, and students, and his feast is celebrated on September 30. His enduring witness invites us to open the Bible with both an attentive mind and a prayerful heart.
